Ishawas, situated within the city of Indore, is a housing project for people who are leprosy positive, or have been severely maimed by leprosy. The name Ishawas is the vernacular Hindi’s conjoint of two words ‘Ish’ meaning ‘God’, and ‘awas’ meaning ‘abode’ or a dwelling place.
The construction of Ishawas colony began in 1960. Thereafter, more houses were constructed in 1965.
The colony has a weaving center to enable colony inmates to be gainfully occupied.
