Seed Banks

The farmer community in India need to protect seed diversity given the prevalence of hybrid seeds cultivation to get short-term profits.

SJS sisters have pioneered seed banking among farmers to protect the genetic diversity and resilience of seeds. Community-based seed banks have been created. These seed banks store native varieties of seeds.

Farmers are now able to grow crops using seeds from seed banks without having to rely on expensive hybrid seeds from seed companies.

Relying on simple methods, the most healthy of seeds from a crop are selected and stored in air-tight containers (most of them earthen pots).
